Multichoice Nigeria has stirred controversy with its announcement of a price hike for its DStv and GOtv packages, marking the fourth increase in just three years. The decision, set to take effect from May 1, 2024, has sparked a wave of mixed reactions among consumers across the country.

Under the new pricing structure, subscribers will witness significant increases across various subscription tiers. For instance, the DStv Premium package will experience a substantial 20.27% hike, soaring from N29,500 to N37,000. Similarly, the DStv Compact+ package will see a notable rise from N19,800 to N25,000, reflecting a 20.8% increase. The Compact package, meanwhile, will undergo a 20.38% surge, climbing from N12,500 to N15,700.

GOtv subscribers are not spared from the price adjustments either, with Supa+, Supa, and Max packages witnessing jumps of 20.8%, moving from N12,500 to N15,700, N7,600 to N9,600, and N5,700 to N7,200, respectively.

The announcement has triggered a flurry of reactions from consumers, with many expressing dissatisfaction and frustration over the continual rise in subscription fees. Some subscribers took to social media platforms to vent their grievances, citing the strain the increased costs would place on their finances, particularly amidst the economic challenges facing the country.

While acknowledging the quality of content provided by DStv and GOtv, many consumers emphasized the need for fairness in pricing and the provision of value for money. Several netizens lamented the lack of competition in the PayTv market, which they argued has contributed to Multichoice's ability to implement successive price hikes without restraint.

Amidst the outcry, there were calls for greater transparency from Multichoice regarding the reasons behind the price adjustments and the allocation of funds generated from subscription fees. Some consumers urged regulatory authorities to intervene and ensure that the interests of subscribers are adequately protected.
