The TechGirls Summer Exchange Program is a dynamic U.S.-based initiative designed to empower and nurture the potential of young women aged 15-17 from the United States and select countries around the world, fostering their interest and pursuit of higher education and careers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math) through comprehensive skills development training.

In 2024, the program aims to support 111 young women from 37 participating countries/territories, along with 13 or more U.S. peers, in a vibrant four-week U.S.-based experience complemented by a seven-month mentoring program encompassing both pre- and post-exchange activities.

Scholarship Details:
Over the years, the TechGirls Summer Exchange Program has provided training and mentorship to 653 teenage girls. Initially focused on countries in the Middle East and North Africa, the program expanded globally in 2022, engaging STEM-minded young women from the United States and select countries across all world regions.

The core of the program comprises a 24-day venture in the United States, including an interactive TechCamp in partnership with Virginia Tech. This program delivers an in-depth exploration of leading-edge technologies and diverse educational and professional pathways in STEM fields. Participants then embark on a community immersion and STEM career exploration in cities across the USA, such as Austin, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, or Seattle. Upon returning home, participants also engage in community-based projects with mentorship spanning seven months.

Scholarship Requirements:
To be eligible for the TechGirls Summer Exchange Program, students must meet the following criteria:
- Citizens of eligible countries/territories and residing in their country/territory at the time of exchange
- Aged between 15 and 17 at the start of the exchange on July 13, 2024
- Born between July 13, 2006 and July 13, 2009
- Demonstrated advanced skills and a strong interest in science, technology, engineering, and/or math in academic studies
- Intent to pursue higher education and/or careers in STEM, particularly technology
- Strong English language skills (advanced intermediate English proficiency)
- Exhibit maturity, flexibility, and open-mindedness
- Committed to completing a community-based project upon their return home
- Meet U.S. J-1 visa eligibility requirements

Eligibility for the TechGirls Summer Exchange Program:

To be eligible for the TechGirls Summer Exchange Program, candidates must be citizens and current residents of participating countries. Third-country nationals residing permanently in an eligible country should contact the program administrators to confirm their eligibility before applying. Preference will be given to those with limited or no prior experience in the United States. Candidates who have traveled to the United States as part of any other ECA exchange program within the last three years are not eligible to apply. Additionally, family members of U.S. Embassy or Consulate staff, U.S. Department of State employees, and family members of the administering organization or partner organizations are not eligible to apply. TechGirls encourages individuals with diverse backgrounds and skills to apply, including those with disabilities.

Scholarship Duration and Rewards:
The TechGirls Summer Exchange Program covers various costs including the visa fee for international participants, roundtrip international airfare from the participant's home country to the United States, roundtrip domestic airfare from the participant's home city (if applicable), housing during the program with accommodations at Virginia Tech and a hotel in Washington, D.C., meals during the program (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), local transportation to group program events, cultural events organized by Legacy International, and emergency health insurance.

Selection Process:
Selection for TechGirls Summer Exchange Program participants is based on eligibility requirements. Independent selection committees, comprised of industry leaders and regional experts, review applications. For international semi-finalists, U.S. embassy personnel in the host country/territory of permanent residence conduct interviews. For U.S. semi-finalists, Legacy International conducts interviews.
