2024 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY MASTERCARD SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AFRICAN STUDENTS: STUDY IN THE USA!

The University of California Berkeley MasterCard Scholarships program aims to cultivate a group of young leaders who possess strong ethics, entrepreneurial spirit, and boundless energy. These individuals will be instrumental in driving and leading socio-economic transformation in Africa.

To date, the Scholars Program has dedicated over USD $1.2 billion to support the education and leadership development of more than 40,000 young people. This commitment continues to grow as we strive towards our goal.

In collaboration with The Mastercard Foundation, the University of California Berkeley has joined forces with a global network of educational institutions and non-profit organizations that share the belief that education is a catalyst for social and economic progress. Together, we are working towards creating opportunities for advancement on a global scale.

Scholarship Details:

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, housed in the Center for African Studies at UC Berkeley, has supported over 120 students from 2012 to 2020. This program is open to both undergraduate and master's degree students; however, doctoral degree seekers are not eligible.
Looking ahead to 2030, the Program will provide support to a total of 108 master's degree students at UC Berkeley.
To be considered for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, prospective master's degree students must first apply to the university through the regular admissions process. Once they have applied for admission to a degree program, eligible students will receive an invitation from the Program to apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship Requirements:

To be considered for the Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Citizenship: You must be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country, including Africans who are refugees or displaced within the African continent. Please note that this scholarship is not intended for citizens of North African countries. Additionally, individuals with dual citizenship, asylee status, refugee status, or permanent resident status in the US, Canada, UK or EU are not eligible.

2. Academic Talent: All prospective Scholars must first be admitted to a UC Berkeley master's degree program to be considered for the Scholarship. Demonstrating academic excellence is an important criterion for admission to the University.

3. Leadership Potential: The Program seeks individuals committed to developing transformative leadership skills and mindsets that engage others ethically to generate positive and lasting change.

4. Socio-economic Disadvantage: This Scholarship is designed for extremely talented individuals from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who may not have access to quality further education otherwise.

5. Commitment to Giving Back: We value well-rounded students who actively participate in activities beyond the classroom. These activities can be directly related to your field of study or other issues (social, economic, political) that you are passionate about and working on. Applicants should highlight their achievements both in their application to UC Berkeley and later in the Scholarship application.

6. Intention to Return Home: We seek students who are engaged with and passionate about addressing issues affecting their communities. The intention of this Program is for Scholars to return home after completing their studies at UC Berkeley so they can utilize their education and valuable professional connections gained through internships, academic training, and job placements.

Duration and Reward of the Scholarship

The Scholarship is fully funded.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars are awarded a comprehensive scholarship that covers all expenses related to earning a master's degree. This includes travel, tuition, Berkeley student fees, visa and SEVIS fees, housing, food, living expenses, as well as cohort signature programs that focus on leadership and entrepreneurship.
MBA students must secure additional funding from Haas Business School by applying for Haas scholarships before the Round One or Two application deadline.

Application Process for Master's Degree Programs

To be considered for the Mastercard Foundations Scholars Program, applicants must first apply to a graduate program. However, not all degree programs are eligible. You can find a list of eligible Master's Degree programs here.

Each eligible graduate degree program has specific requirements that applicants should carefully review. Undergraduate Application Information

Please note that while the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UC Berkeley is not open to undergraduates, we encourage undergraduate students to apply directly to the University of California, Berkeley.
