8 Signs You're Not Getting Enough Protein

Protein is essential for our bodies, making up over 10,000 different proteins that perform various functions. However, our bodies can't produce all the necessary amino acids on its own, so we need to obtain them through our diet. Here are 8 signs that you're not getting enough protein:

1. Swollen feet and ankles: A lack of protein affects fluid balance in tissues, leading to swelling.

2. Mood changes: Protein is necessary for neurotransmitter production, which regulates mood.

3. Hair, nail, and skin issues: Protein is crucial for healthy skin, hair, and nails.

4. Slow-healing wounds: Protein is essential for tissue repair and collagen production.

5. Weak muscles and fatigue: Protein helps maintain muscle mass and energy levels.

6. Feeling hungry: Protein influences appetite hormones, keeping you fuller for longer.

7. Sugar cravings: Protein helps stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing cravings.

8. Frequent illnesses: Protein supports immune cell production, reducing the risk of infections.

Incorporating Protein into Your Diet

A balanced diet with protein-rich foods can provide all the necessary amino acids. Animal sources include lean meats, fatty fish, dairy, and eggs. Vegan sources include legumes, quinoa, nuts, seeds, tofu, tempeh, and spirulina.

Tips for Adding Protein to Your Diet

- Add protein to each meal
- Make healthy swaps (e.g., Greek yogurt instead of cereal)
- Incorporate protein powder into your routine
- Balance your diet with diverse protein sources

Remember, protein is essential for our bodies. By recognizing the signs of protein deficiency and incorporating protein-rich foods into our diet, we can maintain optimal health.

Hidden Dangers of Turmeric, Green Tea and others.

Millions of Americans may be putting their liver health at risk by taking popular botanical supplements like turmeric, green tea, ashwagandha, and Garcinia cambogia. A recent study reveals the alarming extent of liver damage caused by these supplements, with nearly 4.7% of US adults using potentially toxic supplements within the past 30 days.

The Risks: Liver Toxicity and Hospitalizations

The study, conducted by the University of Michigan, found that supplement users were mostly taking these botanicals without medical guidance, for issues like joint health, energy boosts, weight loss, and heart health. However, these supplements can cause liver toxicity, leading to symptoms like yellowing skin, fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain. If left untreated, liver toxicity can result in serious consequences, including liver transplants or even death.

Lack of Regulation and Inconsistent Dosing

The researchers warn that the regulatory processes surrounding these supplements are not as stringent as for prescription medicines, leading to inconsistencies in ingredients and dosages. Clinical trials have also failed to provide robust evidence of their benefits compared to their risks when taken at higher doses.

Safe Usage and Recommendations

To minimize risks, users should be vigilant with ingredients and dosages, especially when combining supplements or taking other medications. The researchers recommend that clinicians obtain a full medication and supplement use history when evaluating patients with unexplained symptoms or liver test abnormalities. Personalized recommendations for safe doses are also essential, considering individual factors like prescription medicines, liver health, and medical conditions.

While health supplements can be beneficial, it's crucial to be aware of the potential risks. By understanding the dangers of liver toxicity and taking steps to use these supplements safely, we can protect our health and well-being. Always consult with a healthcare professional before adding any supplements to your regimen.

Spain Stuns Morocco to Reach Olympic Men's Football Final

In a thrilling semi-final match, Spain came from behind to defeat Morocco 2-1, securing their spot in the Olympic men's football final. Substitute Juanlu Sanchez scored the winning goal in the 85th minute, sending Spain to Paris for the final showdown.

Morocco Takes the Lead

Morocco's Soufiane Rahimi scored a penalty kick in the 37th minute, putting his team ahead. The prolific striker, leading scorer in the tournament, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, and the large Moroccan support erupted in cheers.

Spain Fights Back

But Spain remained calm and composed, equalizing through Fermin Lopez in the 66th minute. The Barcelona player pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired low into the net, making it 1-1.

Late Winner

With extra time looming, Lopez set up Sanchez for the winning goal. The Sevilla right-back fired a shot low into the far corner, securing Spain's spot in the final.

Spain's Olympic History

This marks Spain's second consecutive appearance in the Olympic men's football final. They won silver in Tokyo three years ago, losing to Brazil in extra time. Now, they chase their second gold, having triumphed in Barcelona in 1992.

Morocco's Bronze Medal Hopes

Morocco can still claim their first Olympic medal by winning the bronze medal match against the loser of the France-Egypt semi-final.

Final Showdown

Spain will face either France or Egypt in the final on Friday in Paris. Will they bring home the gold? Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion to the Olympic men's football tournament!

Petrol and Diesel Prices to Decrease on Wednesday

Good news for South African motorists! Petrol and diesel prices are set to decrease marginally on Wednesday, thanks to a stronger rand and a slight drop in the global oil price.

Price Decreases:

- Petrol 93: decrease of 15 cents per litre
- Petrol 95: decrease of 15 cents per litre
- Diesel (0.05%): decrease of 28 cents per litre
- Diesel (0.005%): decrease of 17 cents per litre

New Fuel Prices:

- 95 octane petrol: R23.11 per litre in Gauteng and R22.32 on the coast (the cheapest levels since January)
- Gauteng wholesale diesel price: R20.38 per litre (the lowest since January)
- Coastal diesel price: R19.59 per litre (the lowest since January)

Will the Relief Last?

Unfortunately, this price decrease may be short-lived. The global oil price is expected to rise due to potential supply disruptions in the Middle East, which could lead to a full-scale war. Additionally, demand for oil is expected to increase in the US and Western Europe as the driving season approaches.

Factors Affecting Fuel Prices:

- Global oil price fluctuations
- Rand exchange rate
- Supply and demand dynamics
- Geopolitical tensions

Stay Informed:

Keep an eye on global events and market trends to stay ahead of fuel price changes. We'll keep you updated on any further developments.

Nigeria's Olympic Prowess: 6 Historic Firsts That Paved the Way for Africa

Nigeria has consistently made waves in the Olympic Games, achieving milestones that have set the tone for African sports history. From the D'Tigress' recent quarterfinals feat in women's basketball to earlier achievements in football, athletics, and table tennis, Nigeria has proven itself to be a trailblazer on the global stage. In this post, we'll delve into six historic firsts that showcase Nigeria's Olympic excellence and pioneering spirit.

1. Football Gold Medal (1996)

Nigeria's U-23 football team, led by coach Jo Bonfrere, won Africa's first-ever Olympic gold medal in football at the 1996 Atlanta Games. This achievement remains unmatched, with Nigeria being the only African country to win gold, silver, and bronze in the men's football event.

2. Chioma Ajunwa's Long Jump Gold (1996)

Chioma Ajunwa became the first African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the long jump at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Her record-breaking leap of 7.12 meters stood for 25 years until Ese Brume broke it in 2021.

3. Aruna Quadri's Table Tennis Feat (2016)

Aruna Quadri made history by becoming the first African to reach the men's singles quarterfinals in table tennis at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Although he was eliminated in the first round in Paris, his achievement remains unparalleled.

4. Men's 4x100m Relay Silver Medal (1992)

Nigeria's men's 4x100m relay team won a silver medal at the Barcelona 1992 Games, setting an African record of 37.98 seconds. No other African relay team has matched this performance.

5. Women's 4x100m Relay Silver Medal (2008)

The Nigerian women's 4x100m relay team won a historic silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. This achievement remains unmatched by any other African country.

6. D'Tigress' Quarterfinals Feat (2024)

The D'Tigress' recent achievement in reaching the Olympic quarterfinals in women's basketball is a testament to Nigeria's continued excellence in sports. Despite being the lowest-ranked team, they defied odds to secure their place among the elite eight.

Nigeria's Olympic achievements serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for other African nations. As the Games continue, we eagerly await Team Nigeria's subsequent remarkable achievements, knowing that they will continue to pave the way for African sports excellence.
